6-Day Learn to Sail Holiday

Whether you’re a beginner or have some sailing experience, this six-day learn to sail holiday in the Bay of Islands can help you gain the YNZ Level One: Introduction to Keelboat Sailing, or YNZ Level Two: Competent Cruising Crew Qualifications.

Suitable for those who have never sailed before, or have limited sailing experience, this learn to sail holiday can also be a fun sailing holiday for two people with different levels of sailing experience, and can be catered to those looking for a family learn to sail holiday. It’s also suitable for those who hold the YNZ Level 1 certificate and wish to gain the Level 2 qualification.

The course involves three full days of sailing instruction, followed by three days cruising the Bay of Islands by yourself, with five nights onboard in total.

For beginners, the three days instruction ensures plenty of time to cover the key skills and knowledge to safely sail in the Bay of Islands. For those with some experience, the three days under instruction, combined with the three days self-sail should enable you to obtain YNZ Level Two certification.

Course Outcomes:

At the end of the sailing holiday, depending on competency, you will gain either your YNZ Level One Keelboat Certification or YNZ Level Two Keelboat Certification.

Course Itinerary:

  • Days one to three: Dock briefing then cast off for a day’s sailing in the bay.
  • Nights one to three: Sleep aboard tied to the Great Escape dock.
  • Night two or three: Subject to weather, instructor-led night sail to gain skills in light identification and safe night passages (for those aiming for Level Two certification)
  • Days four to six: It’s time to set sail by yourself, explore the wonderful Bay of Islands and practice your new sailing skills.  Before you cast off we discuss your passage planning, review navigation in the Bay of Islands, give you updated weather forecast information and guide you on suitable anchorages and points of interest for the following days. You will log trip reports to Russell Radio morning and night, and be safely anchored before dusk. You’ll return to the Great Escape dock before 5pm on the afternoon of day six.
