“We’re cruising, unless we’re in front, then it’s a race ‘
Learning to sail, saving up to buy a boat and leaving the UK with her husband in her 20’s, Kerry has had salt water in her veins ever since.
Sailing from the UK into the Mediterranean, then on to the Caribbean via The Canaries and Cape Verde Islands they spent seven years living aboard and exploring out of the way places before deciding to move to New Zealand to raise a family. In 2017 they sailed up to the Pacific Islands for the winter season, spending time in Fiji, Vanuatu and New Caledonia.
Kerry now sails the Bay of Islands, The Hauraki Gulf, and waters in between on their 40ft Yacht which is based in Opua.
She really enjoys sharing her knowledge about sailing, “It’s a passion that I love to pass on, it’s such a wonderful feeling when you see new sailors ‘get it’. ”
Favourite sailing destination – “The Southern Lagoon in New Caledonia is unbeatable in my experience for deserted islets and underwater beauty. Closer to home we have so many excellent anchorages in the Bay of Islands, but Great Barrier Island has to be my favourite if I HAD to pick.”
